what have you done to your rig(s) lately?

Post by Big Dave »

Still have the old ZJ but it is tired. Tires are all dry rotted, unibody is held together with duct tape and bailing wire. Ordered some new 35s and JK wheels w/ adapters for it as I'm also going to hopefully soon get some JK Rubi 44's and move everything over to the 5.9 that's been sitting in the garage with a trans issue for a couple years. Have a 46RE core that I'll get rebuilt this fall and then the plan is to move parts over from the 95 to the 5.9.

Pam's still got her JKUR on 35s, that does most of our wheeling lately. Ran Red Cone and Mosquito with it a few weeks ago.

The '51 CJ-3A is working out great as a cruising around vehicle at the cabin. It doesn't like to start after sitting for a few days, the fuel evaporates out of the bowl. Will probably throw a new fuel pump at it, rebuild the carb, and make sure the seals are all good to hopefully alleviate some of the evaporation issues.

I still have my '91 MJ, I get it out of the garage a couple times a month to go to car shows or car meets. I'm wanting to keep it the way it is for as long as I can and this is the only way I know how. The tires are almost as old as my son, I should get new this season. I made it do some heavy hauling a couple years back, a whole pallet of topsoil for the back yard. Still running strong with 284k on the clock.

The '04 LJ is still around. It got hailed on recently and that storm probably made statewide news a few months back. We usually don't get hail any larger than pea size over here on the western slope/grand valley. I take it wheeling maybe once or twice a month when I can. Most of the trips are half day trips, full day trips get exhausting in the heat out here in the summer. Plenty of 4x4 groups to go wheeling with also. Not a lot in the form of change in equipment, only recent addition is the GMRS radio in the last few years.

Still have the CJ, still has the D20 in it, but I've been gathering parts to make it streetable again. Just bought a bigass electric fan for it because the old Taurus fan never did quite keep up, and I bought a gps speedometer so I don't have to carry the Garmin when I want to drive it. I've also been working on my trailer. Ever since I took out the toolbox that was sunk into the front of the deck to get more deck space I've been missing having a toolbox, so I got one that fits in the A frame up front. Also reinforced the angle iron at the rear that the ramps hook to as I bent them twice moving a skidsteer and then a mini-excavator. Next step for the trailer is mounting one of those cable hoists underneath to hold the spare tire under the deck. Spare tire used to sit where the toolbox is now.

I recently installed a transfer case linkage upgrade from Boostwerks in my '95 XJ. Bought it in 2016 and just got around to installing it.

I haven't wheeled it since just before the pandemic, thinking about going to Moab in November, but not sure yet.
